TEMPE, AZ - Foury blocks west of Arizona State University, there's an urban farm sanctuary. It's also the home of Diann Peart, co-founder of Herb'n Organics and a member of the Phoenix Permaculture Guild.
If you saw Diann’s home, you would have a hard time believing she sits in the heart of Tempe.
She has real working garden complete with chickens, a fruit orchard and a series of teaching gardens. They do bug and weed patrol and provide three eggs a day.
The garden produces lettuce, spinach, artichokes, eggplant, bok choy, swiss chard, a wide variety of herbs and an abundance of flowers, both edible and providing passive pest control.
Since the property is flood irrigated, the gardens are raised up above the flood level - which also protects them from their three lively dogs.
The fruit orchard features peaches, figs, apricots, nectarines, plums, and six varieties of citrus. Big old pecan trees arch over the gardens from two sides.
These days stress can make you cry ... That's why its important to create your own sanctuary -- you know, a place in your backyard where you can just be one with nature and relax.
We like to call Diann “Mother Nature.”
