CLEVELAND - Not surprisingly, Gladys Knight became the focus of Motown week on “Dancing with the Stars".
But it may not have been for the reason the singing legend would have preferred.
The popular ABC show held its sixth elimination of the 14th season, but this week the two lowest scoring stars would have to square off in a Dance Duel.
The show began, revealing actor Jaleel White and Kym were safe, along with actor William Levy and Cheryl.
TV host Maria Menounos and Derek were in jeopardy, as were actress Melissa Gilbert and Maks. Frankly, all four of these couples did well Monday night. But where would the show be without staging fake tension?
Boyz II Men performed, and Natasha Bedingfield sang a song.
The show then revealed classical singer Katherine Jenkins and Mark are safe, as were Green Bay Packer Donald Driver and Peta. As they should be. Katherine’s pretty much a shoe-in for this season’s mirror ball trophy winner, with Donald a close second (that is, if judge Len Goodman didn’t seem to have it out for him).
Melissa and Maria wind up being in the clear after all (big surprise). So the two couples with the lowest viewer votes were Gladys and Tristan; and Disney star Roshon Fegan and Chelsie.
It was a fitting final two for the Dance Duel showdown: both couples had the lowest judges’ scores Monday. If this trend keeps up, the show could actually wind up sending home the worst dancers every episode this season.
Tristan said they were hoping to dance Tuesday night, as Motown week is Gladys’ week.
The Dance Duel was a jive, which neither couple had done yet this season. Just based on movement alone, it was a dance built for Roshon.
Both couples did a good job, but Roshon and Chelsie’s routine simply had more choreography than Gladys and Tristan’s. And Roshon did a sharp job nailing most of the moves.
The judges tried to save Gladys some face: Carrie Ann Inaba voted for her. But Len and Bruno Tonioli both go for Roshon.
Gladys, pack your bags.
The legendary singer was game for anything and a warm and welcoming addition to this season, even if she couldn’t keep up with those younger scamps. All in all, it was a fair sendoff.
Gladys tweeted, “Having a great Tuesday!! Thanks #TeamGladys for supporting me!!”
Week seven should be quite a treat. Monday at 7 p.m. on ABC marks the return of classical week, which was quite impressive a couple seasons back. It should also be right up Katherine’s alley.
