Martin Luther King Jr.: 5 events around the Valley

On the third Monday of every January, we take the day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Here are some events around the Valley where you can honor the civil rights leader.

MLK March :

When: Monday, Jan. 21, 9 a.m.
Where: Downtown Phoenix

The event will begin at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1401 E. Jefferson St, and end at Margaret T. Hance Park, near 3rd and Moreland streets. A community fair will be set up at the park, highlighting local artists and craftsmen. There will be guest speakers, a re-enactment of Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech, dancers, singers and fun activities for the whole family.     

Mesa's MLK Parade :

When: Monday, Jan. 21, 11 a.m. - Noon. 
Where: The parade will begin at University Drive and Center Street and proceed south to 1st Avenue. At 9:30 a.m., Center Street will close between University Drive and Broadway, 1st Street will close between Macdonald and Centennial and 1st Avenue will close between Macdonald and Sirrine. At 10 a.m., Main Street will close between Country Club Drive and Mesa Drive. All of the streets will reopen by 1 p.m.

MLK Festival:

When: Monday, January 21, Noon - 5 p.m
Where: Mesa Arts Center, 1 E. Main St.

The free program includes music, dance, food and information on job and volunteer opportunities, health and community outreach programs.  There will also be a youth area with games, bounce houses and other activities.

MLK Job Fair:

When: Monday, January 21, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Where: Phoenix Airport Marriott, 1101 North 44th Street

This event will offer job seekers an opportunity to meet face to face with dozens of employers who are hiring today!  Companies such as Drive Time, Celerion.com, Direct Energy, International Buildings and many others will be at the event.  All job seekers are encouraged to attend this free event to network, submit resumes, and connect with hiring managers.  Make the most of the event by dressing professionally and bringing multiple copies of your resume.

Basketball Classic :

When: Monday, January 21, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Where: Tempe - Wells Fargo Arena

Some of the best high school boys and girls teams will participate in the Basketball Classic, beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until 8 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena, 600 E. Veterans Way, Tempe.
