Dave Grohl's Sound City Players end run on a high note in Austin

DAVE GROHL's supergroup SOUND CITY PLAYERS performed what has been billed as their final gig at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas on Thursday (14Mar13).

Grohl recruited the likes of John Fogerty, Stevie Nicks, Corey Taylor and Rick Springfield, among others, for a series of international gigs to promote his directorial debut Sound City - a documentary about the California studio where they all recorded classic albums.

After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January (13), the band performed in Los Angeles, New York and London before playing a final set at SXSW in Austin, where Grohl also delivered the keynote address.

The supergroup played for almost three-and-a-half hours at fabled Austin club Stubb's, living up to Grohl's promise that the last show would be "extra long and extra special".

Highlights included a Fleetwood Mac hits medley from Nicks and a short set from Springfield and Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen - all backed by Grohl, assorted Foo Fighters stars and the rocker's former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic.

But the showstopper came from Fogerty, who wowed the crowd with a Creedence Clearwater Revival hits set, featuring Travelin' Band, Born on the Bayou and Bad Moon Rising.

That might be the end for the Sound City Players, although Grohl has told Billboard he would be willing to regroup if his film lands an Oscar nomination next year (14).
