The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants star will play an orphan, who makes it her mission to win her Mississippi town's annual talent show contest in an effort to boost her reputation.
Tony Award winner Judith Ivey, who is currently performing alongside Jessica Chastain in The Heiress, will direct.
Further casting decisions have not yet been announced.
The play first premiered at the Manhattan Theater Club in 1984 and was turned into a big screen adaptation starring Holly Hunter five years later.
