PHOENIX - CALA Phx! Fest is right around the corner on November 1st and 2nd in the streets of downtown Phoenix!
The cultural event highlights Latin American culture and will have activities for the whole family to enjoy. The festival will include food, music, dancing, entertainment, children activities and more.
CALA Phx! Fest is featuring several spotlight performances during the November 1st and 2nd time-frame. Here is a spotlight on a few of them:
BLESS ME, ÚLTIMA
Teatro Bravo is proud to open our new season with Bless Me, Última by Rudy Anaya. Based on the critically acclaimed novel, the play tells the story of young Tony Marez and his nurturing relationship with Última, a wise curandera who has come to stay with Tony and his family in the last year of her life. Throughout his time with Última, Tony delves into a spiritual transformation during cultural and societal changes in the American Southwest.
Founder of the band Mexican Institute of Sound, Camilo Lara has made his way over an expanding niche on the international music scene over the last years. Lara mixes traditional Mexican folk styles with electronica, hip-hop and even Bollywood sounds. The project goes beyond dance floors, to television, film soundtracks, commercials and video games. Lara has worked in the music for movies like "Y Tu Mamá También,""Rudo y Cursi," and "Club Sandwich." His music has been heard on series such as "Breaking Bad," "Scrubs," and "Californication" among others.
Chapito Chavarria was born April 7, 1913 in Solomonville, Arizona. Chapito began performing regularly at the famous La Casa Vieja with his father’s orchestra at the age of 9. Since the mid-1960s the Chapito Chavarria Orchestra has been a beloved center and unifying force with Arizona’s Latino community, playing at community gatherings and celebrations of every kind. Now played by a new orchestra, Chapito’s original arrangements make use of tropical rhythms of the Sonora Santanera sound from Mexico City very popular in the mid-1950s, combined with older Mexican Waltzes, PasoDobles, and Danzon. Today, at age 99 Chapito lives at The Phoenix Manor with his beloved wife of 72 years, Consuelo Huerta Chavarria, age 93.
DJ LENGUA has been tearing up backyard parties, cantinas, and clubs all over California and the world for years with his solid cumbia sounds and innovative jockey sensibilities. His ability to fuse loops from traditional Latin tunes and cumbias with chunky, straightforward beats create seriously infectious mixes. As a founding member of DISCOS UNICORNIO record label, DJ LENGUA has released numerous mixes and three vinyl LP's. Well known at the infamous Club Unicornio nights in S.F. he is also resident selector with the Mas Exitos crew at the Verdugo Bar in L.A. as well as the Mas Discoteca parties in L.A.
Whether behind the turntables, in the studio, or putting together a variety of events, DJ Seduce is always on a mission to capture audiences in a way that sets him apart from most in the entertainment industry. Since his emergence in 2001, DJ Seduce has taken his love for jazz, funk, soul, and world beats, and expanded his global horizons far beyond the nightclub walls. Not your typical DJ, but a musician’s DJ, and a DJ's musician, DJ Seduce has created his own unique sound & style drawing on influences from Africa, Brazil, Cuba, Jamaica, Europe & the Middle East. With an eclectic taste for musical treats, DJ Seduce digs deep through the past and present, giving you a blast of musical fusion from influential taste makers like Art Blakey, Fela Kuti, Jorge Ben, Nicola Conte & Buena Vista Social Club.
Gennaro is an internationally acclaimed artist who showcases regularly throughout major art centers in Mexico including San Miguel de Allende and Puebla. Combining Italian techniques for working with oils, acrylics, wood, and plaster with a color palette from his childhood in Mexico, Gennaro’s art showcases world class skill and a true Latino immigrant perspective. Gennaro will be opening his own gallery in spring 2014 in Phoenix and he is also opening a restaurant/gallery in his hometown of Sonora this November. Gennaro is this year's CALA Showcase Artist; his piece, Árbol de la vida con Catrina, which he made in collaboration with his father, is the image featured in this year's posters and brochures.
