You could be getting more than you bargained for when you drink from a soda fountain.

Every day, about half of the people in this country drink soda. Every year, each of those thirsty folks drink an average of 50 gallons.

To test the safety of soda fountains, the ABC15 Investigators had fountains at Valley fast food restaurants and convenient stores tested for bacteria.

We took sterile swabs, wiped soda nozzles and brought them to a certified lab for testing. The lab checked for total coliform, which indicates fecal matter and E coli, and we found some alarming results around the Valley.

Bacteria can grow almost anywhere, especially if proper cleaning procedures are not followed and in places where countless people have access like self -servicing soda fountains.

Since we showed our results to the Arizona Health Department, they are already taking action.

We’re working to put final touches on our story, and will have the full investigation with the hot spots locations we found Thursday on ABC15 News at 10pm.
