This week’s Tell Us Bellis asked: When did the wettest year occur in the Valley?

It’s hard to believe, but it was more than a century ago when Phoenix picked up an astounding 19.73” of rain. The year: 1905. However, only 2.43” fell during the summer monsoon.

In June, the Valley picked up just a trace of rain; while in July we received .28”. August was better when we saw .92” and the most rain fell in September with 1.23” as the official total at the airport.

That means the majority of our rain came during our winter months. Typically, August is our wettest month of the year followed by December.

If we really start to dig deep, the driest years were 2002 and 1956 when the Valley picked up a grand total of 2.82” of rain for the entire year.

2008 however was the 14th wettest year on record, when we picked up 9.57” of that much needed rainfall.
