Wildfire season worse in south, normal in the north

Reported by: ABC15.com staff, wire reports
Last Update: 5/02 12:14 am
Parts of central and southeastern Arizona could see a tough fire season ahead.

Federal fire managers released their 2009 Wildland Fire Outlook Friday.  The report calls for "significant, above-normal" fire potential.

In late May and early June, the report says, spring winds are expected to lead to hotter and drier conditions.

Monsoon conditions are expected to make for better fire potential by mid july.

The forecast says there's more potential fuel for fires, especially fine fuels like grasses.

The good news: there aren't as many of those types of fuels in southwestern deserts.

In northern Arizona, officials say cooler temperatures have slowed the growth of grass and brush, and there's enough moisture to lead to a "normal" fire season.
