Ridding your home of scorpions; exterminators not best bet

Scorpions have the ability to hold their breath for three weeks, so hiring an exterminator might not even work.

As we have lots of scorpions around the home I lined an aquarium with diatomaceous earth and placed scorpions inside. They were still alive and kicking 2 weeks later. I understand boric acid works but a good hammer is quicker.

I am a sponsor of the show "Sonoran Living" and was disappointed to read such inaccurate reporting from ABC15. Weatherman, Bill, may want to keep his day job. I only hope he does more research with his weather reporting. It's obvious that Mr. Felder (with all due respect to his Herpetology degree) should not be commentating on a subject he knows nothing about. There are several effective products for scorpions. None of which are inhalents. I've never seen fumigants used for scorpion control. My company uses only the best microencapsulated product for scorpions which is labeleled for, and extremely effective. I have no problem shamelessly plugging my company on behalf anybody that may need help with scorpions. We have a $$ back guarantee if we can't take care of the problem plus unlimited free reservices. We even have a "black light" service if things get really ugly; whereby we catch and remove the scorpions from your home. Give Preventive Pest Control a call. We service this entire valley and love a good scorpion challenge. Mention "Sonoran Living" for a discount.

I believe Herpetology is the study of amphibians and while Mr. Felder was very knowledgeable about scorpion anatomy and behavior, I'm not convinced that he is up to date on treatment methods. If your "exterminator" is using products that kill through inhalation then what has been said is true and you are "throwing your money away", but this is not the method I would use as a Pest Control Professional. I am not here to plug my company or any specific product, but I will say that the peace of mind that comes with the help of a professional is no waste of money or time. Please understand that I mean no disrespect to Mr. Feldner, I am convinced he is very intelligent and knowledgeable man.

I believe Herpetology is the staudy of amphibians and while Mr Feldner is very knowledgeable about scorpion anatomy and behavior, it doesn't seem like he is up to date on methods of treatment. If your "exterminator" is using products that kill by inhilation then you are most likely "throwing your money away", but this is not the method I would use as a pest control professional. I'm not going to plug my company or any specific products but I will say that the peace of mind that comes with professional help is no waste of time or money.

We also heard that if you have palm trees in your yard you should have them stripped of their outer bark. The scorpions supposedly like those little "shelves" created by trimmed palm leaves. We had our trees stripped and it dramatically decreased our scorpion sightings.

We are also very proactive in killing them with a torch. We use a MAPP Gas canister with an instant light torch. (You can find these at Home Depot or Lowe's). My husband regularly checks the block wall surrounding our home with a blacklight then instantly torches the scorpion. They have no chance to get away and he can also get into the crevices of the fence wall. He has dramatically cut down on the population living in the fencing. That particular gas is so hot that it only takes a couple of seconds. I have even used it inside on the wall or ceiling without leaving a mark, although it will scorch the carpet. I also agree that diatamaceous earth is like glass to scorpions. Our exterminator regularly uses that as well.

I also disagree. We had same issue in a new home and the exterminator removed all switch/receptacle plates and used diatamaceous earth (used for pool filters) as well as around the house and in the attic. Scorpions will not cross it as it is like fine glass shards and cuts them if they do. We have only found 2 scorpions (dead) since then in 2 years time.

I have to disagree...at least for traditional exterminators. A good exterminator should know that DE (diatamatous earth sp??) is a scorpions worst nightmare. I have a serious scorpion problem at a house we just moved into. We searched around and found a great exterminator. Not only is this company reasonable, but they are very thorough. I am in no way affiliated with the company, but I highly recommend them. I have a two year old and I am very concerned about her getting bit. So far they have done a great job of almost eliminating our problem. They service my house in Gilbert. Contact Steve at Arrow Pest Control. You won't be disappointed. If he can't help you I'm sure he can recommend someone who can.
