PHOENIX -- The National Weather Service here in Phoenix has created something new this year.

You've maybe heard me mention it -- the Phoenix Rainfall Index which gives us a better understanding of how much rain has fallen on average throughout the Valley by taking the average rainfall total of 132 rain gauges placed across the valley.

On Wednesday I sat down with Meteorologist Paul Iniguez from the National Weather Service who created the PRI.

He says while Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport remains the official observation point for the Phoenix area, one single gauge isn't very representative of the entire phoenix area.

"Phoenix is just so big now so we've developed this other index on how to handle on how much rain has fallen across the area. It's a nice supplement to the Sky Harbor data," Iniguez said.

This year has been an incredibly dismal monsoon, which is strange, coming off the heals of last year when we experienced the 10th wettest monsoon in Arizona history.
