PHOENIX -- The National Weather Service has extended an excessive heat warning through much of Sunday as highs are forecast to range from 108 to 113 degrees.

The Weather Service says the warning is extended through 8 p.m. Sunday for the Phoenix area and the west and central deserts.

Sunday's forecast high temperatures are a degree or two less than Saturday's 113 degree reading, which set a record for that date in Phoenix.

The normal high for this time of year is 103.

The National Weather Service says an excessive heat warning is issued when extreme heat or the combination of heat and very low or very high humidity reaches dangerous levels.

The Weather Service says the heat will compromise the health of an average adult if they don't avoid direct exposure.
