PHOENIX -- It's like a safety net for Arizona drivers.

If something goes wrong, from a flat tire to a massive pileup, DPS will be there to protect and serve.

But with the hours counting down until the state officially runs out of money, the holes in that safety net could get a lot bigger very quickly.

"We at DPS are prepared to allocate sufficient resources to the vital functions we're responsible for," said Spokesman Bart Graves.

In other words, crime, speeding, DUI, injury accidents and non-injury accidents impacting traffic flow will be handled like always.

But Graves said there will be sacrifices in services that could affect you.

"It'll be difficult for them to respond to every...collision where there are no injuries."

Without an officer's presence, drivers will have to rely on the other guys' sense of honor.

It's not a prospect motorist Trent McNair looks forward to.

"I think that's totally unreasonable and not acceptable," he said.

And if there is no budget passed, stranded motorists may have a long wait before DPS shows up to help them.

Driver Stephanie Lanphear said, "I don't know that I would necessarily feel less safe out there driving. Perhaps if I drove more at night or in more desolate areas I would."

For now, it's a waiting game for Arizona drivers. One eye on the road and one on which way the budget winds are blowing.
