PHOENIX -- Whether you are in favor of photo enforcement cameras or not, the City of Phoenix is adding them to 10 intersections across the city.
Some of the cameras are now up and officially working at the designated intersections, and others will be put into place in the coming weeks.
The 10 intersections are:
- 35th Avenue & Dunlap
- 40th Street & Pecos
- 16th Street & Jefferson
- 51st Avenue & Van Buren
- 15th Avenue & Missouri
- 53rd Avenue & Indian School
- 12th Street & Camelback
- 67th Avenue & McDowell
- 40th Street & Broadway
- 7th Street & Union Hills
According to Officer Bill Fisher, with the Phoenix Police Traffic Education and Safety Unit, the city has changed red light vendors and will now be using the company RedFlex.
Fisher says the cameras will also have the ability to snap red-light runners who turn left or right on red.
"The cameras also record video and a lot of people don't know that, so when they come to court to challenge the citation, often times they're surprised to see the video," said Fisher.
The standard fine for a red light citation is $257.60, but a judge can increase the fine if he or she determines there are aggravating circumstances, such as if a pedestrian is nearby or if the driver nearly causes a wreck.
A judge has the ability to raise the fine to $480, according to Fisher.
