PHOENIX – Most freeway construction work in the Phoenix area will occur during overnight hours this weekend, as crews continue to make progress on several freeway widening projects. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends drivers allow extra travel time while the following restrictions are in place:

Interstate 10 narrowed to two lanes in both directions between Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Dysart Road from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 21) for lane striping as part of the freeway widening project in that area. Southbound Loop 101 ramp to eastbound I-10 will be closed. DETOUR: Use McDowell Road to 91st Avenue to detour beyond the freeway ramp closure.

Westbound Interstate 10 narrowed to one lane overnight between Cotton Lane and Verrado Way from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 21); from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 22) and from 9 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday (Nov. 23) for freeway widening. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time and be prepared to merge safely in the work zone.

Interstate 17 narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight between Carefree Highway and Pioneer Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 21); from 10 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 22) and from 10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (Nov. 23) for freeway widening. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time and be prepared to merge safely in the work zone.

Eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) narrowed to two lanes overnight between Van Buren Street and Priest Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 21) for freeway widening. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time and be prepared to merge safely in the work zone.

Eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) narrowed to two lanes overnight between State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) and Priest Drive from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday (Nov. 23) for freeway widening. DETOUR: For a complete listing of freeway and local street restrictions associated with the Red Mountain Freeway widening project visit www.ValleyFreeways.com and click on Loop 202.

The Arizona Department of Transportation has some welcome news for Thanksgiving holiday travelers who use northbound Interstate 17 to drive out of the Phoenix area.

ADOT will open another stretch of two new northbound I-17 lanes between Jomax Road and Carefree Highway (State Route 74) on Friday (Nov. 20), in time for the afternoon rush hour.

The new northbound I-17 lanes, including a carpool lane, along the five-mile section north of Jomax Road, represent the latest milestone for the massive $142 million project to add much-needed traffic capacity between Loop 101 and Carefree Highway.

ADOT previously opened two new northbound lanes between Loop 101 and Jomax Road on November 9 and two new southbound lanes between Happy Valley Road and Loop 101 on October 29.

The last stretch of two new southbound lanes between Carefree Highway and Happy Valley Road is expected to open next month (December).

Sections that do not have a one-inch rubberized asphalt overlay yet will be paved next spring, when temperatures warm up enough to provide the conditions needed to properly add the quiet pavement.

The I-17 reconstruction project continues to move toward full completion, along with other projects around Arizona, despite state fiscal challenges. Because dedicated funds for construction and funds for ADOT operations are separate, drivers will see new construction at the same time that reductions are required in highway maintenance and the agency’s customer-service areas.

The project is part of the Maricopa Association of Governments’ Regional Transportation Plan approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004.

A separate $11.2 million project to add a third lane in each direction along I-17 between Carefree Highway and Anthem Way is scheduled for completion by spring (2010). That project is among dozens of state highway projects being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The I-17 Reconstruction Project also includes improved ramp connections between Loop 101 and I-17. The Deer Valley Road interchange along I-17 has been reconstructed. Crews also have added merge lanes between interchanges, sections of sound walls, new signs and new freeway lighting.

In Scottsdale:

INDIAN SCHOOL ROAD OPENS TO FOUR LANES WEST OF HAYDEN ROAD

Indian School Road between Hayden Road and Drinkwater Boulevard reopened to two lanes in each direction on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 18, following the completion of paving.

The project did not increase the number of through lanes on Indian School, but added turn lanes, bus bays and a landscaped median to maximize capacity in the existing four lanes. The project also relocated and widened sidewalks and added bike lanes.

Remaining work, such as adjusting manholes, valves and finishing crosswalks and landscaping will require limited lane closures after Thanksgiving.
