"It is senseless," said Donte Callihan's sister-in-law Sharon Murdock. "Donte should be here, this is absolutely senseless."
Callihan was killed Monday after the wrong-way driver, 26-year-old Aaron Dale, hit three cars on the freeway.
That accident also killed Dale himself, and seriously injured four members of Callihan's family.
Two of Callihan's daughters have since been released from a Valley hospital.
Dale was apparently in a silver Pontiac going south in the northbound lanes when the collision happened near the Carefree Highway exit, Department of Public Safety Lt. Jim Warriner said.
Callihan’s wife, 37-year-old Renee Blackmon, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. She was released Thursday.
The couple's three daughters remain hospitalized with serious injuries.
"They are doing as well as can be expected," said Murdock. "They have a long road ahead of them."
Warriner said three to four other people in two other cars were hurt as well, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
DPS investigators suspect the driver of the Pontiac was impaired.
"As a result of this I lost a brother-in-law and I'm upset," said Murdock. "My three innocent nieces are in the hospital as a result of someone who decided to drink and get behind the wheel of a car."
The family has set up an account to help with the girls' care.
It is in Donte Callihan's name at Desert Schools Credit Union.
