4 do's and don'ts when applying your eyeliner

Think more liner makes your eyes look bigger?  Sexier? More stylish?

The 'old' way of applying liner sounded something like, the more the merrier.

These days, however, the look is more soft and natural, just ask Charla Krupp, author of 'How not to look old: fast and effortless ways to look 10 years younger, 10 pounds lighter and 10 times better.'

Here are four things you should and should not do when applying eyeliner.

What to do:
1. When you're drawing your line
It's more modern to start at the outer corner of the eye and draw inward, according to Nick Barose.

Stop a little more than halfway.

If you go the whole way to the corner, your eye will look smaller, so use the point where your eye color ends as your stop sign.

2. If your lids are starting to droop
If your lids are starting to droop you can try a little optical illusion.

Start your line at the outer corner about a centimeter above your lashes, ever so slightly upward, then bring it down to the lash line.

This will help your eye look lifted.

3. Try a second line
Try a second line for even more drama.

This is a signature technique of the great makeup artist Laura Mercier, who did this on me for a Today Show appearance.

Lift your top eyelid and line the area beneath the lashes with a dark pencil.

It's a little awkward at first, but it makes your lash line look super-dark and defined without making it obvious.

4. Go ahead and line under the lower lid
Go ahead and line under the lower lid if you don't mind drawing attention to it-- that is, if you don't have puffy under-eye bags.
