Ed Jovanovski scored 3:37 into overtime as
Phoenix earned a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.
Shane Doan scored on the power play and Scottie Upshall also tallied for the
Coyotes, who have won two straight following a two-game skid. Ilya Bryzgalov
made 22 saves in the win, Phoenix's first at home this season.
David Backes and Paul Kariya had the goals for the Blues, who have dropped
three in a row since winning their opening two games to the season. Chris
Mason stopped 31 shots.
In the overtime, Vernon Fiddler shot the puck from a sharp angle on the left
side. Mason made the save, but the puck bounced in the air in front.
Jovanovski came charging down the slot and deflected the disc with the shaft
of his stick past an out-of-position netminder. Officials spent a couple of
minutes using video to review the goal.
"There was a little breakdown down low and I just decided to barge the net and
it went off my shaft," said Jovanovski. "Any time they take over a minute you
get a little antsy. They were looking at it. It was a good goal, we'll take
the two points."
Blues head coach Andy Murray didn't argue the call.
"It was clearly a goal," said Murray. "Jovanovski just came driving through.
We had everybody around there, but the puck was up in the air and he was the
biggest body there and he got to it first."
Backes scored 3:22 into the second period, but Doan tied it six minutes later
on a shot from below the left circle.
Kariya put the Blues ahead with 7:41 left in the middle stanza, but Upshall
netted the tying tally from in front off a pass from Mike Lombardi at 8:27 of
the third.
