Fouhy on the physical demands of marching bands

I'm going to talk about a recent study that says the physical demands of playing in a marching band are the same as playing football.

That's right. Gary Granata, an exercise physiologist out of New Orleans, had some band members fill out a survey on the physical demands of marching in the band.

From that survey Granata concludes that marching band is as physical as playing football.

My response? Remember the Cal-Stanford game of 1982 when Cal returned the kick-off for a touchdown and the band was on the field?

Football player wins trombone player loses. Simply put that was the last time a band went on the field before a game was over.

Another case in point -- when was the last time you saw a trainer run onto the field to aid a band member.

No offense, but if you still think marching in the band is as tough as playing football you obviously never played football!
