An ASU biochemistry senior named Fiesta Bowl Queen

Mercedes Hendrix, an Arizona State University senior majoring in Biochemistry and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars will wear the crown as the Queen of the 39th Annual Fiesta Bowl.

Hendrix was selected from four women representing all three Universities in Arizona at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort on October 7.

As Queen, Hendrix will serve as an official spokeswoman and ambassador for The Fiesta Bowl organization during its annual Festival of College Football, which encompasses more than 40 events surrounding the 39th Annual Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and 21st Annual Insight Bowl.

Judging of the scholarship opportunity was based on community service, scholastic achievement, poise, personality and an essay submission.

The selection process included several panel interviews, television interviews with Stephanie Sandoval on ABC15’s Sonoran Living Live and public online voting on ABC15.com

The Queen and Court will represent the Fiesta Bowl throughout the season at various community philanthropic events and at many Fiesta Bowl related activities including the Fort McDowell Fiesta Bowl Parade, the Fiesta Bowl Block Party, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Other members of the court include Katie Dempsey a a senior at the University of Arizona majoring in speech and hearing, Vanessa Evans, 20, is a junior at Northern Arizona University majoring in public relations and Jessica Lagreid, 21, is a senior at Arizona State University with double majors in marketing and sustainability and pursuing a Certificate of International Business.
