Investigators said Jose Camacho, 19, was a clerk at a Circle K near 91st Avenue and Van Buren Street.
On Friday, July 3, investigators said Nima Hadavi, Camacho's roommate, ran into the store, appeared to attack Camacho, and then stole $2,100 worth of cigarettes.
A mutual friend of the two, Correy Ferrante, waited outside as the getaway driver, according to police.
After reviewing surveillance video, police said Hadavi came into the store less than an hour before the fake robbery and had a casual conversation with his roommate.
Alex Camacho lives in Tolleson and said he visits the Circle K regularly.
"A joke like that is uncalled for, especially in these times," said Alex Camacho. "They're doing this guy a favor by giving him a job and then he turns around and does this. It's a slap in the face to the company."
Alex Camacho said the clerk should have appreciated his job and not taken advantage of it.
"I need a job. I'm looking for a job and these idiots do this. They're not acknowledging the fact they've got a job and they've got a way to pay their bills. If they thought it was a joke, the joke's on them now."
According to investigators, the three men made statements implicating themselves in the scheme and apparently got the idea after hearing about a string of other similar armed robberies where large amounts of cigarettes were stolen.
All three men could now face charges for conspiracy to commit armed robbery and burglary.
