TOLLESON, AZ -- A family was able to safely escape when their West Valley home caught fire Sunday.
The fire started around 4 p.m. at the 2-story home near 99th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road in Tolleson.
Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Hugh Chase said crews from Phoenix, Tolleson and Avondale fought the fire.
Chase said the family heard sounds of a fire and were able to get out. He said there was a male and female in the home, but he was unsure whether there were any children with them.
Preliminary information indicated the fire started in the garage and spread to the home, Chase said.
He said the home, valued at around $200,000, was a total loss.
Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles.
