"To save gas and be more mobile they use their golf carts to get around," said Brad Cohen, battalion chief for Sun City West fire department.
But Cohen says they are taking chances by driving a golf cart on the street.
"There's no protection for you when you're in a golf cart, versus a car where you have that large piece of metal around you in a car to protect you in the event of an accident," said Cohen.
In spite of two accidents in the last two weeks, some Sun City West residents feel safe driving around the town in their golf carts as long as they are cautious.
"I really try and watch out because it's obvious if I got broadsided in one of these I would end up with a couple of broken hips," said Earl Voss.
But being cautions may not be enough. The acceleration is slow and the brakes are not as good as a car.
"Plus the drivers in a car aren't paying attention like they should to the golf carts," Cohen said.
Seat belts can be installed in golf carts, but they are not required to drive on streets.
