New tool to help Valley sheriff’s posse locate lost pets

SUN CITY, AZ – The Sun City Sheriff's Posse, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation, will soon have a new tool to help track down lost dogs.

It all started with a phone call to Sun City Posse commander, Captain David Japhet.

The call was from a longtime Phoenix resident, who wished to remain anonymous, whose mother resides in Sun City.

He explained how he has always valued the companionship that his mother's pet provides. He added he had read a recent fund drive letter, in which an enclosed brochure described the "Community Partners" program.

The joint effort between the Posse, S.C. Fire Dept., 4 Paws Animal shelter, Best Friends Dog Club and the Adultcare Assistance Homecare assists in providing temporary pet care and fostering in the event that the pet's owner is suddenly hospitalized, and the pet is suddenly uncared for.

The caller then asked Capt. Japhet whether the posse uses a pet scanning device to assist in the relocation of lost dogs.  When Capt. Japhet advised him the team usually relies on a local vet or "Pet Smart" because the group does not have the facilities or equipment to scan, he replied, 'would you like to have the equipment?'

Capt. Japhet said the man offered to purchase the scanner, and have it sent out as a donation to the Sun City Sheriff’s Posse.

"This digital scanner will continue our commitment to assist our residents to aid in the identification and re-uniting of their lost pets, while also providing the same service to visitors with pets from all over the nation," explained Capt. Japhet.

Authorized by Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Sun City Posse patrols the entire community in radio equipped fully functional police cruisers, observing residential areas, shopping centers, hospitals and business offices day and night. The group’s mission is to serve as the eyes and ears of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

“For a lot of our residents the most valuable thing in their lives right now is the love and companionship of their pets,” said Capt. David Japhet.

The manufacturer contacted the posse commander and said the scanner is in the process of being shipped out and should arrive sometime this week.

“Our efforts are paying off,” added Best Friends Dog Club of Sun City President, Skelli Dedmon.
