SUN CITY, AZ -- Enter Sun City and one of the first sights drivers see are the distinctive and very tall palm trees that line the retirement community's boulevards.
The Maricopa County Department of Transportation is removing almost three dozen palm trees from Sun City this week.
Some are hollow making them unsafe to trim and at least one has been hit by lightning.
Trees facing the saw blade are also leaning over roadways, creating potential traffic hazards.
MCDOT Northwest District Operations Maintenance Supervisor Dan Clements said a contractor has been hired to cut down 35 trees.
The palm trees are at various locations throughout the community.
Clements said all of the trees will be removed by Monday.
