GOODYEAR, AZ -- A west Valley animal shelter is asking for help as it tries to get a neglected dog back on the road to recovery.

Kim Henson, an employee at Sun Valley Animal Shelter, says she was at home Wednesday night when she heard scratching at her front door.

That's where she found "Mary," a 7 pound Shih Tzu that needed help.

"She's just stolen our hearts, everyone is in love with her," says Henson.

It's unclear who abandoned the dog in Henson's neighborhood.

The dog will need extensive medical care. It appears Mary's jaw is broken, which means the dog's mouth appears open most of the time.

Something happened to one of Mary's eyes. What is left of the eye will have to be removed.

The dog is also missing most of its hair and needs dental work as well.

All those issues brought Mary to the Goodyear Animal Hospital. That's where Dr. Amy Schomburg checked her out.

"It's heartbreaking to see, but we're also glad she's here," Schomburg said. "We can make her better."

Mary's recovery will likely include a couple of surgeries and a potential vet bill in the $1,500 range. That's more than the shelter can afford, which is why it's seeking donations from the public.

Anyone wanting to help can donate on the Sun Valley Animal Shelter Web site, or send a check, ATTN: MARY'S FUND, to 7150 N. 110th Avenue, Glendale, Arizona, 85307.
