BUCKEYE, AZ -- The Buckeye Police Department issued a warning to its residents Thursday.
Police are urging residents to be cautious if they receive any unusual calls concerning bank accounts or utility and credit card payments.
The warning stems from an incident earlier this week when police say a concerned citizen called the Buckeye Utilities Department and told them she received a recorded phone message saying that she was late on her water bill.
Police say the message asked her to leave personal information, including a credit card number.
The woman said the caller I.D. showed the number of different water company than the one she uses, both in Buckeye.
However, police say the woman was not late on paying her bill and the Buckeye water company never called her.
Lt. Phil Harris of the Buckeye Police says if you receive a call that is "out of the ordinary," you should ask the caller for their name, then hang up and call the business back.
He goes on to say if the call is legitimate, the company will be able to explain the situation and what you need to do from that point on.
If any call you receive seems to be a scam, you are urged to call your local police department.
