BUCKEYE, AZ – A firefighter was rushed to Maricopa County Medical Center Wednesday after suffering burns while fighting a fire in the West Valley.

According to the Buckeye Fire Department Chief Bob Costello, 26-year-old Marcus Haynes suffered third-degree burns on his hands and one arm.

Costello said Haynes was searching for possible occupants in a large travel trailer near Interstate 10 and Oglesby Road when flames flashed over him and he was burned.

"We saw the firefighter go in and come back out, he was on fire," said neighbor Henry Arenas.  "He was on fire."

Video from Air15 showed Haynes alert as he was being wheeled into the hospital for treatment.

"I think it's really sad," said neighbor Justin Tyner referring to Haynes' injuries.  "They risk their life to put out fires."

There were no other injuries reported.

The fire destroyed the trailer, and its cause is under investigation.

Haynes is a 3-year veteran of the Buckeye Fire Department.

Costello says Hanyes is in good spirits and is resting comfortably.

Investigators credit Haynes' safety equipment in preventing his injuries from being much worse.

"For that we're thankful," said Deputy Chief Paul Carmen.  "I think the breathing apparatus probably saved his life."
