Is it a BIG bird, a plane, a UFO? Nope this a futuristic-looking shade structure in the East Valley.

I think its quite facinating and its really nice to relax and look at it, or sit under it and read a good book.

I've passed by this area dozens of times on my way to work and wondered what it was.

The official report: It's functional art shade structure. The centerpiece of the 37-acre ASU SkySong development project, a meeting center in south Scottsdale for entrepreneurial businesses, ASU departments and ASU partners.

The frame of this custom tensile fabric structure consists of eight steel supports 111 feet in length. The steel “legs” weigh about 24,000 pounds each.  The structure peaks 125 feet in the air.

The frame supports eight integrated conical-shaped pieces covered with 50,000 square feet of Teflon-coated fiberglass.

The fabric is designed to withstand 650 pounds of force per square inch.

Have you ever seen something in the Valley and wondered "What the Heck is it?" send me an email and  I'll try to figure out what it is.
