TEMPE, AZ -- Officials say a Tempe police officer suffered minor injuries when his patrol car was hit by a vehicle running a red light Friday night.

Tempe Police spokesman Scott Smith said a woman driving a Chevy passenger car was traveling east on Southern Avenue at about 11:30 p.m. and failed to stop at a red light at 48th Street.

Smith said her vehicle struck the front of a Tempe police officer's vehicle as he was making a left turn on a green arrow from westbound Southern to 48th Street.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and released a short time later, according to Smith.

The female driver was cited and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, although the matter is still under investigation, Smith said.
