TEMPE, AZ – A truck was discovered submerged in Tempe Town Lake Wednesday morning, but no one was found inside the vehicle.
Mike Reichling with the Tempe Fire Department initially said two bodies were inside the truck. However, dive crews were not able to find any bodies after a search, said Tempe Police Sgt. Dan Masters.
Shortly after the initial search, officers discovered that the 1979 Chevy truck was reported stolen and was taken from a nearby hotel.
That hotel was the Hampton Inn at 1429 N. Scottsdale Road, located about a mile north of the lake.
Crews responded to the scene on the east side of Rural Road, near the Loop 202 freeway, after a passerby reported seeing the vehicle go into the water around 7 a.m.
