TEMPE, AZ -- An East Valley Boy Scout will be 'retiring' 500 American flags with help from Tempe firefighters Wednesday night.

Cenric Nigbur, 14, chose the task as his Eagle Scout project and has collected flags from across the state and the country.

Nigbur and his fellow Boy Scouts will work with The Tempe Fire Department to properly dispose of the tattered flags according to the United States Flag Code.

That code specifies that, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

The Boy Scouts will be disposing of the flags at the Tempe Training Center located at 1340 E University Drive at 7 p.m.
