Salt River tubers have fun and help clean up along the way
MESA, AZ -- Organizers say thousands of tubers not only enjoyed some fun at the Salt River Saturday, but did a little work along the way.
The July 4 event took place on the Lower Salt River starting at 8:30 a.m. where tubers picked up trash bags at the Salt River Tubing headquarters.
They could get a $5 tube rental discount if they brought back a litter bag full of trash at the end of a day of floating down the river.
The coupons were apparently a huge success as hundreds of full litter bags were returned, according to Lynda Breault with Salt River Tubing.
Tubers could get the Tommy Tuber litter bags, beach balls and prizes, according to Breault.
The event was held in partnership with Take Pride in America, a national partnership program that promotes the appreciation and stewardship of public lands, including parks, forests, historic sites, and schools.
The "Bag it For Bucks" event will also be held Sunday. Anyone wanting to participate will need to pick up the trash bags at the Salt River Tubing headquarters in northeast Mesa on Power Road.
Special holiday hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with the last tube rental at 3 p.m.
