MESA, AZ -- A Mesa police officer shot and killed a 22-year-old man while helping serve an "order of protection" Friday afternoon, according to authorities.
The shooting occurred around 1:30 p.m. near University Drive and Higley Road.
Mesa Police spokesman Mike Melendez said officers had been at the home earlier in the day on a disturbance call. There they found the man and a 21-year-old woman arguing.
The woman reportedly left the home and the man told police he was waiting for his sister to pick him up so he could leave.
Later, according to Melendez, the woman called the officers, asking how to obtain an order of protection and an officer gave her the information over the phone.
Just after 1 p.m. officers returned to the home to help the woman serve an order of protection against the 22-year-old man, Melendez said. She reportedly went outside while officers contacted the man.
Melendez said the man produced a knife and threatened the officers. He said the officers feared for their lives and one of the officers shot and killed the man.
Neither officer was hurt.
Neighbors told ABC15 that many of them were afraid of the man.
They said he yelled at children, driving fast as they played outside, played loud music and they would often hear him fighting with his girlfriend.
"Somebody actually said it doesn't seem like there is love lost," neighbor Janae Blackburn said about the dead man. "Usually there's tears, usually someone upset, but you can see all the people here -- nobody is upset."
