MESA, AZ -- At a Thursday night meeting, the Mesa Public School Board considered closing a local middle school.
According to the Mesa Public Schools website, Powell Junior High School might be repurposed as a community center. The proposal was made as part of an eight-part document outlining potential changes to the school system.
Mesa Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh has voiced concern over the potential closing of a local school.
"I am very disappointed in the recommendation by Mesa Public Schools to close Powell Junior High School," Kavanaugh said in a statement. "Powell has been a key anchor institution for its surrounding neighborhoods and for District 3 for decades."
According to the website, the Planning and Boundary Design Advisory Committee would create new junior high school attendance areas for Powell families; they also said parents could request open enrollment at other nearby schools.
