MESA, AZ -- Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has been awarded an $8.9 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to expand the airport's passenger terminal.
Airport officials said Monday that the grant will cover 95 percent of the cost of the project with the remainder of the $9.5 million project coming from the Gateway Airport Authority.
The project will be built north of the existing terminal and officials hope the expansion will be completed by late November 2010.
The addition will add two extra gates to the four that are already available at the existing passenger terminal.
Mesa Mayor Scott Smith says nearly 1 million people will be able to arrive and depart annually through the terminal once the expansion is completed.
