GILBERT, AZ -- A barricade situation at a Gilbert home turned dangerous for officers when they were affected by the Valley's high temperatures Friday.

Gilbert Police Lieutenant Hugh White said nine SWAT officers had to be treated for heat-related illness and dehydration during the three hour standoff at the home near Lindsey and Warner roads.

Police said that shortly after 11 a.m. Gilbert police responded to a domestic violence call and when officers arrived, John Witt, 38, would not allow his girlfriend to leave the home.

At 1:45 Witt did allow the woman to leave but would not come out himself.

As SAU officers worked to get the man to come out, Gilbert and Mesa firefighters were called out to help officers by providing water, air conditioning and saline IVs.

White said that nine officers needed to have IV fluids and of those, two required two bags.

Witt surrendered without incident at 2:12 p.m., according to White.

None of the officers were transported to the hospital.

Witt faces charges of assault and criminal damage.
