GILBERT, AZ -- A Gilbert scrap yard is bracing for a flood of cars this week after being designated the final resting place for hundreds of 'Cash for Clunkers' cars.
Motor Pro Auto Recycling in Gilbert expects to receive 500 'clunker' cars before Friday.
Owner Mark Buessing says they've already received three cars and will begin stripping the cars of any valuable parts.
"We'll grab what parts we can, then crush the car," said Buessing.
Under the rules of the program, Buessing has 180 days to crush the car after receiving it.
Buessing is paying between $100 and $250 dollars per 'clunker' but hopes to recoup that money by selling off the car's transmission, rear end assembly or other sheet metal parts of value.
You can buy some of these parts for up to 90 percent off what they'd cost new.
The 'Cash for Clunkers' program dictates that dealerships destroy the engine before selling the used car to a scrap yard.
"(The government) doesn't want the engines back in the marketplace," said Buessing.
Dealerships, Buessing says, are required to drain the 'clunker' car's oil and replace it with sodium silicate then run the engine until the internal parts seize up.
