Summer is the time to lay back and relax, but in this economy some families are having a hard time doing that. You don’t have to forego your vacation because your wallet isn’t full; You simply have to know what expenses to cut to save and have fun.

1. Lodging. Look for the best hotel deals. Usually sites like Expedia.com, Dealbase.com, and Travelocity.com can help you compare and find the best deals on hotels. Also try to find places that rent by the week and have built-in kitchens. Having a kitchen will allow you to cook your own meals and eat out less.

2. Food. Food can be one of the biggest expenses while on vacation, especially if you are constantly eating out. When you are out on that week long vacation, go to the grocery store and stock up on food for the week. It will save you in the long run.
Plan a barbeque in a park or beach. You’ll still enjoy eating out, but save money on the food.

3. Flying vs. Driving. Many people prefer to fly vs. drive to their destination, but it can be expensive especially if you have several passengers. Calculate which will be the cheapest option for your commute. A good road trip brings a family closer together and will save you money. Sites like fuelcostcalculator.com can help you calculate how much you can expect to spend on gas.

4. Set a budget and itinerary. Set a budget and stay within your means. You can still enjoy yourself if you set a budget and plan your activities in advance. Search the Internet prior to your vacation for activities and know what they cost in advance.

5. Kids eat free. Check which restaurants and hotels at your destination that have kids eat free offers. You will be surprised at how many restaurants offer kids deals that you can take advantage of. For example, coupondivas.com has a daily list of many restaurants that offer kids eat deals.

If you have any helpful ideas to save on that summer vacation, please leave your comments. We would love to hear from you!
