A prosecutor says "Serial Shooter" suspect Dale Hausner, who is accused of killing eight people and attacking 20 others, is a narcissist who cut out newspaper stories about his alleged shootings.

"He was so interested in it that he cut the newspaper articles out about the crimes that were committed, the murders that were committed, the shootings that were committed, he cut them out of the newspaper and he kept them as souvenirs, he kept them in a scrap book," said prosecutor Vincent Imbordino.

Imbordino also told the court detectives have recordings of Hausner listening and following television news reports of their crimes.

The Maricopa County prosecutor went on to say to jurors Monday at the opening of Hausner's trial that people in metropolitan Phoenix were frightened by the shootings.

Hausner, one of two men arrested in the "Serial Shooters" case, has pleaded not guilty in eight killings and 20 other attacks that occurred during 2005 and 2006.

Samuel Dieteman, who says he was Hausner's accomplice pleaded guilty to two murders in the case and is expected to testify against his former roommate.

Twenty jurors made up of ten men and ten women with eight alternates will hear the details of the case which could last up to nine months.

"This will be a long, bloody road," said Imbordino when referring to the length of the case and gruesome details expected to emerge from the investigation.

Hausner and Dieteman were arrested in August of 2006.

If convicted, Hausner faces the death penalty in the serial killings.

Monday afternoon, Hausner's two brothers were in the courtroom sitting directly behind the 35-year old who often whispered to his defense attorneys while prosecutors showed the jury photos of every victim in the crime spree including animals that were shot in the early stages of the series of crimes allegedly tied to Dale Hausner.

"We just want the truth to come out, that's all, just the truth," said Randy Hausner while leaving the courthouse Monday.

Hausner's defense attorneys will make their opening statements Tuesday morning in Judge Roland Steinle's courtroom.
