Police say 22-year-old Garrett Hohn and his 21-year-old friend were walking home from downtown Tempe just after 2 a.m. when they became involved in a verbal argument with 37-year-old Dan Ray Gukeisen.
Reportedly, the argument progressed and became physical in front of an apartment, near 1st Street and Rio Salado Parkway.
The argument became physical and Hohn was stabbed. He was given first aid by citizens until police and firefighters arrived.
Hohn was taken to a hospital where he died.
Hohn's friend was not injured, according to police.
Officers located two men they say are "persons of interest" and, after further investigation, arrested Gukeisen for 2
nd Degree Murder.
Police report that there is no known reason for the argument and they believe the men did not know each other.
Attorney Anthony Knowles says he represents one of the men being questioned. He says his client was home when he heard banging on the door. Knowles claims his client was protecting himself and his family.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the verbal argument, as there are conflicting accounts of the incident between the involved parties.
