The City of Phoenix has approved a memorial honoring four newsmen killed in a midair helicopter collision last July.
The Phoenix Parks Board has authorized plans for a memorial to be built in Steele Indian School Park near where two news choppers fell.
The design will feature a sidewalk leading to a plaza with benches and a wall with plaques identifying the dead. The spot will be surrounded by four ash trees.
Construction is expected to begin once fundraising is completed. About $50,000 is needed to build the memorial.
The collision occurred on July 27th while helicopters from all five local TV stations were covering a police chase through central Phoenix.
ABC15 pilot Craig Smith and photographer Rick Krolak and 3TV pilot Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox died in the crash.
