Phoenix soldier dies in Christmas Eve Afghanistan attack

A soldier with ties to the Valley has been killed in attack in Afghanistan.

Corporal Charles P. Gaffney, 42, of Phoenix, was assigned to Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) when his combat outpost came under enemy attack in Patkia on December 24.

The father of two entered the Army in August of 2006. His wife and daughters live in Idaho.

A memorial service for the fallen Soldier will be held in Afghanistan. Fort Campbell will also honor Gaffney at an Eagle Remembrance Ceremony in January.

Gaffney’s awards and decorations include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Overseas Service Ribbon; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Combat Infantry Badge and Weapons Qualification: M4-rifle, expert.
