A Valley woman thinks prayer most likely stopped a man from stealing her car outside a Mesa church on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim said the man walked up to her around 1 p.m. while she was in the parking lot at St. Timothy Catholic Community Church near Dobson and Guadalupe Roads.

Police said the man flashed an air pistol then threatened her as he demanded her car.

She said that’s when she started to pray which caused the man to run.

The woman called police and shortly after that call, police said they saw a man fitting the description walking in front of the police substation.

Officers arrested 24-year-old James Jett in connection with the attempted armed robbery.

Police said Jett admitted to the crime and told them he needed cash.
