A 23-year-old man who reportedly fell into a trench in north Phoenix early Wednesday has been rescued and taken to the hospital.

The man fell into the 25-foot hole near 22nd Avenue and Happy Valley Road just before 10 a.m., according to fire officials.

Authorities said he sustained injuries from the fall, and was complaining of his right shoulder hurting, as well as shortness of breath.

The victim, who works for Torent Resources, apparently fell into the trench while trying to cover it with an 8-foot metal cover.

He's undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
