Investigators claim to have discovered dozens of fighting roosters at a south Phoenix business Wednesday night.

An official with the Phoenix Police Department said officers have confiscated at least 50 birds and the business owner was taken into custody.

Police officials were serving a search warrant related to an armed robbery and home invasion case at a tire business near 10th Street and Broadway Road when they found evidence that led them to believe that the business is participating in illegal gamecock fighting.

"This is by chance," said Stacie Dabolt with the Arizona Humane Society.  "This unfolded on top of what they were already out here for."

Investigators found roosters in cages, syringes and animal vitamin products that are commonly injected into the birds, according to authorities.

"There are some beautiful birds back there," said Dabolt. "It makes it hard to do our jobs because (the birds) have to be humanely put down."

According to the investigators, the roosters were all manicured and ready for cockfights.

"We're seeing old scabs, dried blood, lacerations that have been hand sewn and topical ointment put on," added Dabolt.

Investigators reportedly also found several weapons, a ballistic vest, cash and ammunition on the property. Authorities said suspects were using these items were being used during armed robberies and home invasions.

Investigators also believe this organization has been involved in border-related crimes including kidnappings around the Valley, according to authorities.

The owner of the business was arrested while in court Wednesday on other charges. Six people found in the business during the execution of the search warrant were believed to be in the country illegally, according to authorities.

"It's extremely sad," said Dabolt.  "A couple of (the roosters) wouldn't let us get near them.  They're cackling.  It's unfortunate this will be their demise."
