A Hollywood actor with Arizona roots donated $100,000 to the Phoenix Police Department on Monday.

The money will be used to buy rifles for patrol officers, officials said.

Actor David Spade said he decided to make the donation after hearing the Phoenix Police Chief and Public Safety Manager Jack Harris and the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association President Officer Mark Spencer had been working towards a program to have 300 rifles deployed for Phoenix patrol officers.

A department spokesperson said Spade called last week, saying he wanted to make the donation to help keep patrol officers and the community safe.

The former Valley resident dropped off the check on Monday morning at the Desert Horizon Precinct.

Spade's local charitable donations aren't a first for him.

Earlier this year, Spade donated $10,000 to an animal shelter in his hometown of Lakeside, Arizona.

Last year, he donated $25,000 to the family of a fallen Phoenix Police officer. Officer Nick Erfle was shot and killed while trying to arrest a suspect in September 2007.
