El Mirage will  become the first municipality in Arizona to use cameras to catch illegal railroad crossers.

The City Council voted 6 to 1 in favor of putting in railroad cameras across the city.

The cameras will also be put up at several intersections and mobile units will also roam the city.

At first, the cameras will be used to catch red light violators and those who drive around the railroad crossing arms.

Later, the mayor said they may also be used to catch speeders.

The city will likely use the same company that catches red light runners in the Valley, Redflex Traffic Systems.

Under the proposed contract, there would be up to 20 fixed cameras installed and four or five mobile vans that would be parked along the roads.
