Valley drivers can now drive one mile-per-hour faster on Arizona freeways without getting caught by a photo radar camera.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has raised the speed threshold for photo enforcement cameras from 10 mph.

Drivers can expect to receive a ticket in the mail if the cameras catch their vehicles violating the posted highway speed limit by 11 mph or more.

DPS director, Roger Vanderpool, says the new trigger speed eliminates inconsistency. He said the change was also influenced by the public’s input since the expanded program started in September.

Officials have made other recent changes to eliminate inconsistencies. The speed limit for the downtown I-10 corridor in Phoenix was recently raised to 65 mph from 55 mph, for example, so speed limits are more consistent from one photo enforcement zone to another.

DPS reminds drivers that while cameras won’t catch you until you go 11 mph over the limit, officers can continue to issue citations at speeds below that threshold.
