Phoenix police pulled over Marcello Rojas, 43, for speeding near Elwood and 16th streets at about 10 p.m.
When police spoke to Rojas, he told them he had “hit a guy on a bicycle.”
After investigating his claim, police discovered that 77-year-old Billy Ray Thompson had been killed when Rojas’ car allegedly struck him from behind near 19
th Place and Broadway.
Police say that Thompson was riding his bike legally, westbound on Broadway when he was hit.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Rojas was arrested and booked into jail on hit-and-run charges.
